Last June 22, 2014, I was invited to be part of the Watsons Hair Affair that happened at SM Megamall. I gladly said yes because I am kinda obsessed with hair products and of course I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to share some tips when it comes to building one’s personal style. Make-up and hair stylist Kristine Ramos created three different hair styles that Filipinas can try for themselves, while I gave style tips on what outfits would best suit these hairstyles.
Our hair is really our crowning glory. How we wear it says a lot about our personality- short, long, colored, or treated. So it is important to know a few good hair styles that can transform the ordinary look, into chic and fabulous in just minutes, without leaving the comfort of your home.
The first hair style is an updo. Not most women know how to style their hair up, myself included. Not only does it feel intimidating to do, it can, by the looks of it, take so much of your time. Surprisingly, one can do an updo hair style in 15 minutes or less. Yes, we timed it, with matching chikahan portion pa!
Horizontally section your hair into two to start. Then work your way into dividing each of these two sections by vertically setting a partition. In this case, you proceed and pony tail the bottom part without sectioning it vertically. Roll the pony tail until you create a bun and secure it with bobby pins. Put hair spray as needed to hold the hair in place.
Next, twist each sectioned portion of the upper part of your hair and wrap them around the bun you created. Secure with bobby pins and use hair spray as needed. Finally, complete the step by styling the front part of your hair. To create volume, tease it using a teasing comb, apply hair spray and neatly comb the hair depending on your preferred partition.
Viola! A chic updo hair style.
It looks complicated but its basically an easy three-step hair style. Keep in mind that it’s okay if it looks messy and not as polished as what most updos look like. Its actually made to be a bit messy as it creates a fresh, this-is-what-I-look-like-waking-up vibe. Plus, it eliminates the idea that you look like you’re off to a very formal occasion where you have to wear a gown or something formal.
Speaking of what to wear, pair your updo with earrings for accessory. This is your chance to flaunt your favorite pair as it can be visibly seen-greatly complimenting your updo look. An updo hairstyle is perfect for special or formal occasions, which is given. But on a regular day , its perfect for working women who oftentimes don a blazer or a structured dress. Not a corporate or career woman? Wear dainty dresses that can highlight your updo to emphasise even more your feminine side.
The second hair style is braid. Did you know that there are about a handful of different kinds of braids? Braids can give a youthful, even regal effect when one choses to style it properly. Think of those Greek royalty women who love wearing their braided hair or those fashion bloggers who like to incorporate their braid hair as part of their style. Whoever you relate to, there’s only one conclusion: braids never go out of style.
The tricky part is not how to create a braid but how to wear it. Sure, a one or two tail braid is the simplest yet safest style, but if you’re not into the whole boho-chic, Wendy’s or Pipipi Longstocking’s vibe then you might wanna try how Kristine did it. Depending on how many braid tails you make, you can braid them altogether or loop it around each other. You instantly get a different effect that’s made to let your hair stand out.
An updo braid if I may put it. It’s a more casual approach to the usual updo look. Wear a necklace to highlight your beautiful neck and shoulders, it also aims to contrast the effect of your braided hair getting all the attention. If you want to tone down a look that’s too edgy or too fashion-forward, go ahead and go for a braided hair. It’s a great hairstyle for any casual look. Best to wear simple, solid colored clothes that have flowly silhouette to compliment the carefree, yet sweet vibe braid hair brings. Hey, even Greek goddesses don their hair like this, nowadays, modern brides go for braided updo on their wedding day.
The last hair style is something that we women often like to sport. The ever popular, curly hair. There have been instances that I’ve been asked how I curl my hair, because it looks like I had to go to a salon and have a hair stylist do it for me. The secret? It takes a lot of practice, a good hair iron (I use a flat iron that doubles as a curling iron) and a few episodes of iron burns. Is it doable? of course! Can you do it yourself? Definitely. And because I really wanted to master the art of curling one’s hair, I immediately volunteered! Kristine showed some tricks and tips when it comes to achieving that celebrity curls.
First, prep your hair. If you plan on curling your hair, skip the conditioner and just use shampoo instead. Next, apply hair mousse to help moisturize your hair. It’s a way to prepare it for the heat it has to endure to achieve those perfect curls.
Now if you have fine, limp hair, setting it is the way to achieve long-lasting curls. According to Kristine, a minimum of one hour of setting is what it takes to achieve lasting curls.
The way Kristine set my hair looked like its an updo na!
After 5 minutes of setting my hair, we had to remove it to show everyone how it looked.
Kristine managed to tease my hair to achieve more volume. She also had to paddle brush my curls to soften them, creating voluminous big curls.
O ha! Celebrity curls achieved! Thank you so much Kristine for doing my hair.
You can wear any outfit with your curly hair and get away with it. It can easily amp up your plain ol’ shirt + jeans + sneakers look and validate a glamorous flowy blouse + sequinned skirt + stroppy heels outfit- both are two staple styles that you can always try for yourself. Whatever you want to wear works when you have soft, celebrity-like curls.
After the Hair Affair demo, I immediately went to Watsons to check out some hair products that my family & I have come to love.
Gatsby hair wax. My husband, Mr. GJG is a fan of hair wax and practically uses it everyday. I have come to appreciate it as well because (hush, hush) I sometimes use it for myself. Those nasty baby bangs are hard to tame, thus hair wax comes in and rescues me from my distress.
Hair spa and hair conditioners.
My guilty pleasure includes hair treatments because I have long, dry hair. I like indulging and would, if needed, use them thrice a week. It gives the necessary nutrients and moisturizer back to my hair after much damaged done by frequent styling.
Hair Treats hair spas are on Buy 1 Take 1 promo!
A clarifying shampoo is a good product to use when you’ve had too many products applied on your hair. It gently removes chemical residues from your scalp and hair. Leaving your hair recharged and energized.

More brands that are Buy 1 Take 1. Grabe, these are such good deals. We all need to use hair shampoos and conditioners right? Why not buy them when they’re on sale? These can save you enough money to spend on hair accessories like bobby pins and hair clips.
