Summer time is usually for kids to do activities they like. Be it playing outdoors, learning a new skill or developing a talent they never thought they have. As a parent I’ve always been on the lookout for fun summer activities for my kids which is why I was eager to attend the press preview of iShine Talent Camp Year 6 held last weekend.
Toni Gonzaga-Soriano hosted the event. I can’t believe she’s now a mom herself.
The program opened with a panel of experts in their respective fields.

The panelists answered a few questions to guide us parents when it comes to raising our kids and letting them nurture their gifts.
Gift versus talent
Dr. Leticia Ho, President and founder of Philippine Centre for Gifted Education explained that gift is usually an above average level of a child’s academic performance. While talent is a child’s above average level in human performance.
How do you know if your child is gifted?
Children give cues early on. They can be showing signs of what they’re naturally inclined to just a few months of age. It could be music, motor skills, or language.
When is the best time to expose your child to camps or workshops?
There is no set age for it but as a parent, you need to look for signs that your child is developmentally ready. If you want to hone his athletic abilities, make sure he’s physically ready (as such sport requires a child to be at a certain age). Same way goes for academic abilities. If your child shows signs of absorbing information and learning, then he’s ready.
Why is proper nutrition important in nurturing your child’s gift?
Jong Icasiano, Food Scientist and Nutritionist firmly believes that proper diet plays an important role in nurturing one’s gift or talent. It’s like a fuel to one’s body and it is needed in order for the body and brain to properly function. And Promil 4 has Nutrissentials, a unique combination of nutrients & essential ingredients that is formulated for age appropriate kids to help unleash talents for optimum growth and development.
Parents role in nurturing the gift
Aside from taking care of the child by giving him proper nutrition, good hygiene and enough sleep. Dr. Tippy Tanchanco, Clinic director and Consultant Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician of MedMom Institutde for Human Development, Consultant on Developmental Behavioral Pedia at The Medical City, Associate Professor of Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health, emphasized the important role of parents to their child: to give them the opportunity to develop his gift or talent.

My son likes singing and dancing and has always been fascinated with musical instruments. Maybe I’ll enroll him in music or dance? But he also likes art and is very fond of building things so maybe he can also do art and engineering? Hala na! I guess I’ll let him decide on what camp to pick.
Selene & Juro had fun at the launch. They enjoyed the different activities that’ll most likely be part of each camp.
Selene is Shari of The Misty Mom’s daughter and like Juro, she’s equally excited to attend iShine Talent Camp for the first time.
