Summer doesn’t permit me to go to the gym as often as I would when my kids have school. Aside from not wanting to wake up at 5 in the morning–hahahuhu–our helper is on leave which means my kids are always with me. But since I’m committed to being healthy & active as much as possible, I workout regularly because if I don’t I get stressed & I feel like something’s amiss. So on days when I couldn’t leave the house I workout at home.
Nope it’s not always easy to workout at home. In fact it’s more challenging because there are so many distractions happening and if your will isn’t as strong you could end up just watching TV or playing with your kids. Huhuhuhu I am guilty of this sometimes. So here’s a few tips on how I try (operative word: try) to squeeze in a workout at home.
CHOOSE THE BEST TIME FOR YOU
When do you feel you have the most energy? Morning? Afternoon? Night? Once you’ve figured this out it’s easy for you to work around your schedule. In my case I like working out in the morning. Usually I wake up earlier than my kids during summer so I make sure that I get to workout while they’re sleeping so I can focus on my sets. Sometimes though my lil’ Mr. JG wakes up earlier than I do so he ends up working out with me.
DRESS UP LIKE YOU’RE GOING TO THE GYM
If you can’t perform, japorm. But more often than not, I like to japorm so I can perform. Hahaha! Going on full battle gear even when you’re just working out at home is one way to motivate yourself to keep moving. You wouldn’t want to waste an outfit so might as well pretend you’re going to the gym and you need to be in active wear even when you’re at home. I know this may sound silly but it works for me. If I’m still in my pyjamas aka pambahay clothes even if my workout station at home is all set up, I feel lazy to move. Plus wearing workout clothes may help you prevent injuries & can help you move better.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
You have to know what kind of workout you can do at home and what you can stick to. There are tons of resources you can check online. Youtube, fitness websites and even free apps. Personally I like Nike Training Club, Fit Plan, and 7M Women. I also bought Katie Crewe’s program which I’ve been following the past few weeks. It helps to really have workout sets you can stick and follow.
GET TRAINING TOOLS
When you know what kind of workout you can do at home, it’s now time to get the right tools to help sustain it. I only have dumbbells, ab roller and a gym ball. The first two are technically my husband’s and the gym ball I had to store away because it was too big for our apartment. Hahahuhu. So as I was browsing on what I need, I discovered Active. A brand that houses more than a handful of training tools for everyone’s needs–whether you’re a beginner or an athlete, they have something for you.
Their vision is to be the brand that improves each person’s life by providing the best possible form of physical training that can be performed anytime and anywhere. They aim to inspire, push, and educate properly and completely each and every customer to become fitter and happier versions of themselves.
If you watch my Instagram stories you’ve probably seen the liquid chalk I use at The Upperdeck gym. I used to have asthma and I find the usual chalk giving me stuffy nose. I got the liquid chalk from Active–which I’ve been using when doing strength training and I love it. It has helped me with my pull ups! No longer do I use gloves– along with this kettlebell and slider.
Though I still find doing kettlebell swings awkward, I still like using it for other workout sets like squats, halo, lunges, single arm deadlift, and single leg deadlift to name a few.
Currently my favorite training tool: the slideboard which I also got from Active. It lets me do a bunch of sets that targets my upper and lower body. You can also use it to get a full body workout.
Best part? It’s handy and I can bring it with me anywhere I go.
I know it can be challenging to really workout at home especially if you’re a mom. With the kids wanting time to play and the chores waiting to be finished, sometimes working out elsewhere is the way to go. But on days when you cannot go to the gym and still want to clock in time sweating and being active know that it is possible to get a decent and good workout at home. I hope the tips I shared would help you stay active whenever, whenever you are. 🙂
