If you’re wondering what my diet is, well it’s pretty simple.
I am not the type who would starve herself just to be thin. As much as I want to be back to my pre-married, pre-babies figure, I know I can’t because I still eat A LOT. The fact is, I even gained four freakin’ pounds after weaning lil’ Mr. GJG few months ago. But, despite this, I am oftentimes asked what my “secret” is to maintaing my figure (but now you know that I haven’t really maintained it heehee) and I always answer: I don’t do any diets because I love eating and I indulge often, but I do watch what I eat. 🙂
Therefore, I am on a seafood diet. I see food and I eat it. 😉 Speaking of seafood, thank God I have no allergies as I like them. For those of you who feel the same way, here’s a restaurant on the south side of the Metro that you can add to your growing list of places to eat.
Bag O’ Shrimps anchored itself in Manila only with the passionate captaining of couple-owners, Jandrew & Princess Pastoril. Princess, who had spent time in Los Angeles could not pass the chance to bring a taste of the West back to her Philippine home, an archipelago bursting with seafood potential. After a ton of tedious research, taste-testing – and a couple pounds, the couple opened this “Wharf-in-the-City” seafood-shack’s doors to the local community.
The harbour themed interior is very similar to those seafood shack restaurants you find in the West, where Princess, the beloved half of the couple behind BOS, lived and studied right after high school. Coming back to her home, which is the Philippines, Princess wanted to bring back what she was once used to- the feel of dining at a harbour seafood restaurant, at the same time, she also wanted to share her recipe which she concocted from scratch.
Attention to detail. Princess said she & husband Jandrew were very thankful to their interior designer who happens to be their good friend, for converting their vision into reality as this is exactly what they wanted.
The laid-back, harbor themed restaurant boasts a mouth-watering menu containing the rich flavors of the sea, all freshly prepared in bold spice-mixes and recipes developed by Princess herself. There is also a strict table-culture observed at Bag O’ Shrimps – eat with your hands. The mess treats you to a one of a kind experience where you can unplug from the bustle & wind down with friends. “Your hands get dirty, so you can’t touch your phone. There’s no choice but to talk…” says Jandrew.
Ahoy! This typography will greet you once you’ve reached the second floor of the establishment.
Lil’ Ms. GJG was super excited when I told her we’ll have one of her favourites for lunch- shrimp!
Their main dish is their Seafood Specialities By The Bag. You can mix and match shrimps, crabs, clams, mussels, and their weekend special- lobsters in one bag. You can also add imported or local sausage, as well as corn cobs. Choose among four flavors of sauce- Bag O’ Momma (Princess’ secret recipe), Lemon Pepper, Cajun, and Garlic Butter. Want it spicy? Choose from mild, medium, hot or very hot.
They also have appetizers that can fill you up! I just wish they had baked mussels in their menu too.
My advice when you dine at Bag O’ Shrimp: Get ready to Shake, Sip, Dunk. Let your perfectly manicured nails dig in as you MUST eat with your HANDS! 🙂 It’s too good, you won’t be needing any reminders but incase you forget, there’s a huge sign on the wall as well as a corner lovingly dedicated on the menu.
Here are the food Princess ordered for us to try.
A slab of crabstick is enveloped together with the chili, giving a hint of seafood in every bite.
This got two thumbs up from lil’ Ms. GJG. So much so that she called dibs on this the moment it was served.
Bag O’ Momma with add on corn & sausage.
The thing that makes this bag delicious is the sauce! Delicious, mild (but some find even the mild hotness spicy) sauce created by Princess after years of cooking abroad for herself and her siblings. She definitely eared the Bag O’ Momma title! A cup of rice isn’t enough to savour the flavor but I just had to control myself.
Fresh shrimps partnered with crunchy corn cob and smokey sausage.
Our verdict?
Isn’t it obvious how much we enjoyed lunch? Our table looked like a dozen men sat down and ate. Heehee.
But it was just us four ladies and our three daughters under 10 years old. Heehee. Don’t judge! It was that good that we almost cleared everything that’s on our table.
Thank you so much Princess and Jandrew for having the SoMoms over. Here I was with lil’ Ms. GJG, Patty & Sabine, Cai & Yuki with Princess of Bag O’ Shrimps. I’m definitely coming back and I’ll be bringing Mr. GJG, a fellow seafood lover, with me.
True enough, just a few days after our lunch, I went back with my family to have another #BOSexperience (Bag O’ Shrimps Experience)
We don’t mind eating with our bare hands if the food is this finger-licking! Despite it being a little bit far from our neighbourhood, we know deep inside that we will be craving for a Bag O’ Momma again, if not soon. So please open up somewhere in between North and South, just right in the middle would be fine. 😉
