In this modern day and age, gadgets are more and more widely available not only for adults but even for the young ones. Teenagers, tweens and even kids and toodlers have access to technology, which can greatly affect their behavior and personality. This is a controversial subject that some may oppose while others may not. I think as a parent, knowing the effects of exposing our kids to certain technologies can help us decide our take on it.
I was invited along with the other SoMoms for a luncheon to get to know Enlight Kiddie Tab, a digital tool that can help teach your child. The event was held at Guevarra’s, which I shall blog about separately. As usual, I’m posting pictures galore from the event.
Michal Cruz- Ladioray, Head for Strategic Partnerships, of Lifeware Technology, Inc. shared that more and more parents hand over their personal tablets to their children for gaming. “We saw this as an opportunity to encourage parents to introduce technology to their children not just for technology’s sake, but as a tool to improve or develop their kid’s learning. This is where we got the idea to set up Lifeware Technology, Inc. to focus exclusively on products and solutions for education, even for young kids.”
“But media is not the enemy,” says Dra. Angela Halili-Jao, former head of child and adolescent psychiatry of the UP Manila College of Medicine-Philippine General Hospital. “Our children—and grandchildren—would benefit more if we viewed technology as an ally—an aid to learning and the acquisition and mastery of developmental skills.”
“Parents need no longer ask if technology should be used in learning. It should. The better question is: how should technology be used to aid early learning?” “They need to ensure that children also have time away from the computer to pick up social skills, explore creativity and survive without a gadget.” added Dra. Jao.
“They have shown greater gains in intelligence, structural knowledge, problem solving and language skills compared to those who do not use technology as they learn.”
Enlight KiddieTab, a Philippine-made, 8 inch, HD capable multi-touch tablet modified to ensure a safe, secure, and controlled environment for children, now available in select Toy Kingdom stores throughout the country. The device is developed by Lifeware Technology Inc., makers of easy-to-use smart tools for electronic learning and teaching.
The touchscreen Android comes preloaded with about a hundred apps organized according to a child’s developmental stage. It has content to help children count, read, learn the fundamentals of addition, subtraction, multiplication and others. It mirrors and supplements the traditional kinder to primary school curriculum.
Enlight KiddieTab is ergonomically designed for the use of children ages 3 to 8. It is durable and safe, ready for a child’s rough and tumble lifestyle. Through the time lock and parental control features, parents manage and regulate the duration of use and content their children engage in.
To go to the parent’s access, simply press the tarsier and hold it for two seconds.
A pop up window will appear, prompting you to enter your PIN.
From here, you can access the Kiddie Tab settings such as Internet connection, phone calls, and airplane mode.
This is what the default parent’s access looks like.
Just like any other tablet, apps are displayed too.
Here’s an origami app that I tried using. A step by step procedure where you can create with your kids different origamis. Cute!
Here are more information about Kiddie Tab.
Look, Thammie’s kids are loving it! Kiddie Tab raffled off two units and the winners were:
Jane Uymatiao aka The Philippine Beat
and Thammie Sy, perfect since her kids love it na!
Overall, I like the Kiddie Tab because of its three key features:
1. Parent’s access that let’s you “filter” the apps you want your child to use. If your child is most of the time under yaya’s supervision, Kiddie Tab is the way to go. Sometimes, yaya might sneak in a little Facebook time (or any other websites she likes visiting). With Kiddie Tab, you have the option to choose what app and even sites you can let your child use.
2. Time-lock feature. The Kiddie tab has a time-lock feature that let’s you set it at a specific time. This can help you and your child set usage of the tab, enforcing not only time management but discipline as well.
3. It’s not just a kiddie tab. It is the perfect tablet for your child. It’s not like the tablet toys that your child with outgrow eventually, it’s more than that. Because it’s an android tab that operates like of a regular tab, your child can even use it when he grows older, even when he’s in college. For a retail price of 8,990 pesos, it’s worth the money. Did I mention, it’s memory is expandable? 🙂
Thank you for having us! The SoMoms Chesca, Patty, Michelle, Jane, Thammie and yours truly with Dra. Angela Halili-Jao and Michal Cruz- Ladioray.
