{Review:} The Cookie Butter Spread Showdown

Rumor has it that there’s two popular creamy spreads that are so good once you’ve tried, you can’t help but rave about them. I was curious because I’ve been seeing photos of them on my Instagram and Twitter feeds. Being a curious cow that I am, I wasn’t able to resist so I joined the cookie butter spread bandwagon.

The beginning of Cookie Butter spread was originally the Biscoff cookie, also known as speculous. Biscoff is a spiced brown sugar cookie that is made by the company Lotus Bakeries.

The name “Biscoff” is derived from the combination of words biscuit and coffee.

All Biscoff cookies are baked in Lembeke, Belgium by Lotus Bakeries using the original recipe created in 1932”. Els Schneppers invented Biscoff spread, which is also known as Cookie Butter.

Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter is, in its most simplistic terms, spreadable Speculoos cookies. Speculoos cookies are classic Belgian cookies with great crunch, and a slightly caramelized, almost-but-not-quite-gingerbread flavor. After the cookies are baked to a fabulous finish, they’re crushed into a fine powder and mixed with magical ingredients (read: vegetable oils) and turned into a smooth, spreadable substance we call Cookie Butter. It resembles peanut butter in color and consistency. Make no mistake, though; this is a treat through and through. Spread it on toast, bagels, pancakes or waffles. Use it as a dip for hunks of dark chocolate or pretzels or (gasp!) veggies like carrots or celery. You could keep it really simple and just use it as a dip for a spoon.

I ordered my Biscoff goodies from Lorena And Loreta. They also have a bunch of other products from Trader Joe’s which I shall order next time!

Oh the Biscoff cookies is so good I can finish a pack in one sitting! It’s perfect for coffee and and tea.

As you all know, I love anything sweet so I was very excited to try and compare these two. So which one do you think is better? 😉

A side by side comparison of Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter and Lotus Biscoff Spread.

As you can see, Biscoff is filled to the brim (that means more value for our money!) heehee. But just so you know both are without a doubt creamy, you can’t tell the difference once you’ve scooped them on a spoon.

I like Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter because it resembles to peanut butter only there’s no hint of peanut flavor but of butter. It’s a perfect addition to anything sweet as it instantly gives that rich, creamy flavor.

I like Lotus Biscoff Spread because it’s sweet and has a hint of gingerbread. It’s perfect to pair with anything that lacks flavor or even something that’s full of flavor. It’s creamy and crunchy at the same time. A dollop of this creamy goodness and your plain old dinner roll will turn into a yummy appetizer or dessert!

Look, banana with a scoop of  Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter equals banoffee goodness, all I need is the graham base and whip cream.

Multigrain bread with Biscoff Spread and sweet ham!

Sinfully good! This multigrain + bacon + Biscoff is to die for! A mixture of sweet, salty & crunchy is definitely a morning maker.

Oooh if someone would’ve gifted me these goodies for Christmas I would jump with joy! *hint hint*

So if you ask me which one I like? I have to say I love Biscoff Spread more than the Cookie Butter. I’m about to try my luck with baking (last time I “baked” was when I was still single) so I’m very excited to inject (inject talaga?!) these creamy spreads into my recipes.
