*Warning: this is not a scary post! I for one am a scaredy cat so I wouldn’t even dare write anything scary! LOL*
Hello Thursday! As what I’ve tweeted earlier today, “I’ve always liked Thursdays (it’s the main course), its before weekend (dessert) & waits silently after the start of the week (appetizer)”. So do you like it as much as I do? how’s your Thursday so far? Mine was about something new. As you all (or at least some of you) know, My family and I are moving to a bigger place next month so I’ve been quite busy lately fixing, decluttering and somewhat semi-packing.
It’s August and this month in particular is what the Chinese call as “ghost month”. It is said that during ghost month, it is not advisable to make any big decisions and start anything new. Like get married, sign any contracts and enter into deals or even visit the sick or go to wakes. I, in particular am not really into superstitions & beliefs but if in such situation it presents an opportunity to apply them, I unwillingly do so. As long as there’s no harm done, I’m cool with it.
Again as what I’ve tweeted earlier today, ” Never really believed in ghost month up until I was old enough to make big decisions. I’ve always started something every August. Weird.” I’ve always liked August, because of it being my birth month. As far as I can remember, August had been kind to me, so I never really thought about how ghost month affected me.
So today, my husband and I decided we get the keys to our new apartment. Yes, today we officially own our new home.
Apart from the ghost month belief that I’ve come to understand and somewhat apply for myself & my family, another old superstition got me thinking; the first few things one must bring to her new home: rice & salt.
It is said that one must carry with her a container (or a sack) of rice and salt (but must be filled to the brim) to give prosperity & protection to one’s new home. So that’s what I did.
Unfortunately, technically speaking salt & rice aren’t the first two things we brought into our new place. We had the air conditioners and stove delivered and installed a month before, during the time we were renovating. So is my rice & salt for prosperity & protection still valid? That I don’t know. But like I said, there’s no harm in trying.
Also it is said to not bring in an old broom into a new place. Uh-oh, I just used our old broom to clean! Bad luck? Nah, I don’t believe so. I believe I’m lucky for even cleaning a new place. 😉
As of the moment, I’m just thankful for another opportunity to build a new home for my family. I shall update you about our new place, quite excited to give you a glimpse of it. For now please stay tuned and join my birthday giveaway.
Happy Thursday!
