When it comes to make up, I’m a very simple girl. I like it clean and natural. I’m not very experimental (the most daring I can go is to try different shades of lipstick!) nor am I knowledgable with different techniques on how to apply eye make up–but I’ve been dying to know how to perfect that flawless gradient look most make up artists have done on me.
Now my goal this year is really to have good skin. Good enough skin that I won’t need any base to cover my imperfections. I’m not really there yet, so while I’m on my way to perfecting flawless skin, I get help with homegrown brand Happy Skin to understand the foundation of good skin.
With summer being hot and humid, I admit less really is more for me when it comes to skincare and makeup. Thankfully, Happy Skin knows exactly how I feel. They hosted an intimate gathering a few weeks back for beauty bloggers and beauty editors to further discuss what exactly does one need this season–whether she’s basking under the sun or bundled up in a cold place. Learning how to conveniently pack only the essentials when it comes to skincare and makeup is a must!
Knowing the basics of having and maintaining good skin is key, starting with figuring out what your skin type is.
WHAT’S YOUR TYPE?
Unlocking your true skin type is easy: Wash your face first, then avoid applying products for about two hours. According to Dr. Raissa Pasion, a board-certified dermatologist and a member of the Philippine Dermatological Society, “If your skin feels tight and has flaky or reddish areas, you have dry or sensitive skin.” “If it looks shiny all over, you have oily skin. If it feels oily on the T-zone, but feels normal or dry everywhere else you have combination skin. If there are no signs of oiliness of flakiness and you skin feel smooth, you have normal skin.”
Understanding your skin means being able to give it the precise care it requires. You would also know what products you should stick to and what products to avoid. Georginna Desuasido, a certified master makeup artist and a lead instructor at the Makeup Designatory School said “When applying makeup, the first thing you need to consider is your skin type. This determines the kind of base and coverage you’ll use.”
Dr. Raissa Pasion and Georginna Desuasido shared stories & tips about skin, particularly how to achieve good looking skin.
clockwise: Make A Clean Sweep Revitalising Micellar Makeup Cleanser, Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Hydrating Powder Foundation, Zit Zapper Cream, InstaBeauty Blur Cream, Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Hydrating Liquid Foundation, and Second Skin Cream.
The bases created by Happy Skin not only measure up to the needs of different skin types–each base also contains expert-backed ingredients that boost the skin on the surface and within.
Here are some things you need to know about Happy Skin bases and what they’re meant for.
Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Hydrating Liquid Foundation, Php 999
The superb hydration this foundation delivers is thanks to hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in skin. It has great capacity to retain water, so it’s able to plump up and hydrate skin. This liquid foundation comes in three shades & is recommended for anyone with dry skin or who’s traveling to a cold destination. It has a dewy, three-dimensional finish that makes the skin look younger.
Application: Use flat kabuki brush so the foundation is buffed and blends well on the skin.
Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Hydrating Powder Foundation Php 1,399
A reliable compact powder is what every girl needs especially on a hot-weather. This powder comes in three shades and also contains broad-spectrum SPF 20 to protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays. To boot, this face powder uses micronised sunscreen. Micronised sunscreen don’t give white cast for it has smaller or micronised particles of sunscreen. This base’s powder formulation is best for those with oily skin.
Application: Use the sponge included to dab powder on your face if you want more coverage. For more natural coverage, use a face brush to apply the powder since brushes pick up less product than sponges.
InstaBeauty Blur Cream, Php 1,299
This blur cream can benefit oily to dry skin types. Primer works wonders, because aside from blurring imperfections, it serves–as a barrier between makeup and natural skin oils, helping makeup stay longer. Fine lines and wrinkles can also be diffused by using a blur cream. You get smooth, mattified skin that can withstand the heat. This primer also boasts retinol–a form of vitamin A that promotes the exfoliation of old and damaged skin cells and stimulates collagen production, leading to fresher and youthful-looking skin.
Second Skin Cream, Php 1,199
Silicon-free foundation that works like a bb cream that works both for oil & dry skin. Need I say more?
Zit Zapper Cream, Php 1,299
For women with sensitive and acne-prone skin, Zit Zapper is for you. Also silicone-free, the ZZ cream contains salicylic acid that dries up existing acne and prevents them by exfoliating pores.
Make A Clean Sweep Revitalising Micellar Makeup Remover, Php 699
While this micellar make up remover helps rid of stubborn eyeliner and mascara residue, it also doubles as a toner. It uses micelle technology–it traps and removes dirt, oil, and makeup, cleansing the skin without drying it. Works for all skin types and is also great for acne-prone skin as it doesn’t clog pores like heavier oil-based cleaners. It doesn’t need to be rinsed off–it can be applied with a cotton pad and wiped over the skin, just like a toner! It’s induced with anti-inflammatory Japanese tea extract and antioxidant lotus seed extract that locks in moisture as you cleanse.
The intimate event was also the perfect opportunity for Happy Skin to show off why their base products are a cut above the rest–having the perfect marriage of skin care & make up.
The battle between two primers.
Brand X versus Happy Skin’s InstaBeauty Blur Cream. Look at how the latter managed to cover the orange more, hiding the “pores” more efficiently.
Not your average flat foundation.
Ever get that dull, flat looking effect when you apply a foundation? Some say it has something to do with the way you apply your base, but Happy Skin thinks otherwise. Sometimes, it’s the foundation. Happy Skin Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Liquid foundation on the left egg while Brand X is on the right egg. See how more dimensional the former is versus the latter that looks matte, flat and just all out dull?
Breathable Base? Yes, please!
They say most powders are the same. But when it comes to being light, how light do you think your powder is? This experiment required air for one to see how light Happy Skin Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Hydrating Powder Foundation is. Once the blower was switched on, the feathers in the vessel with Brand X didn’t move an inch, indicating that the air didn’t pass through the gauze which only means that Brand X powder is heavy– a complete total opposite with Happy Skin Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Hydrating Powder Foundation. The feathers danced gracefully, showing how light and airy the powder is. Everybody was amazed! Light kung light, perfect for summer!
I’ve tried the SS & ZZ creams and I think I’ve featured them before. Now I’m equally excited to try Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Hydrating Liquid & Powder Foundations plus InstaBeauty Blur Cream. I promise to do a #FOTD as soon as I’ve tried these three products so you can see how it will fair on me.
No doubt Happy Skin is one homegrown brand that I love ‘coz I’ve written about their products a few times and you can read them all HERE.
